Start-ups and established businesses are taking advantage of mobile apps for the advancement of their business. As the New Year unrolls itself upon us, new trends in the mobile device app arena are ready to be unveiled for these businesses to take advantage of. This article will discuss the trends that will continue in 2020 as well as new trends that will bring mobile apps to a whole new level.

Blockchain Technology

Blockchain Technology started in 2018 when many financial institutions and online retailers tapped the technology to bring increased safety to their system. Blockchain Technology, as the name suggests, are “blocks” that are placed in a public database, known as the “chain”. These “blocks” can store information from transactions of the consumers with the business.

In 2020, Blockchain Technology is projected to continue as a trend, which businesses can incorporate into their apps to increase security, tracking and quality control, which can create a faster and more secure transaction for the consumers (Smart Insights, 2019). According to experts, Blockchain Technology is even predicted to become a billion-dollar technology by the mid-2020s (Raja).

Internet of Things (IoT)

The Internet of Things (IoT) is connecting various devices using the Internet, which enables these devices to communicate with each other to perform a desired task. IoT has been integrated into many devices such as smartphones, TVs, cars, smartwatches, home appliances, and many other technology-based objects that have the capability of connecting to the Internet and sends signals to communicate with each other.

IoT will continue to become a major trend in mobile app development in 2020 as many smartphones today that have IoT integrated will have the capacity to interact with other devices to perform tasks such as controlling home appliances, home security features and even other mobile devices such as smartphones, smartwatches and other wearable technology.

Augmented & Virtual Reality (AR & VR)

Augmented reality applications have been around for a couple of years with Google’s Glass headset. Its inception dates as far back as the 1950s in the aviation industry that will allow pilots to see data while seeing the real world. In the gaming industry, augmented reality has been used as well such as in the worldwide phenomenon Pokemon Go, developed and published by Niantic Inc.

In 2020, augmented reality will continue to become a trend and proof of this is the release of Apple’s ARkit and Google’s ARcore, which are applications that can allow the device to understand its position in the environment. One application of this technology can be seen in the Ikea Place app, an iOS app by Ikea. The app allows users to hold their devices and virtually drop furniture in a space, which allows the user to have a visualization of the space with the virtual furniture in place.

Cloud-based Mobile Apps

Cloud technology has been used by many businesses today for a variety of things. When used in mobile apps, it enables cross-platform connection between the apps, regardless of whether developed by Apple or Google. Cloud-based mobile apps enable users to have more storage devices and can be accessed using different devices, which further allows for increased productivity and collaboration.

M-Commerce is the daughter of E-commerce. As more consumers are aiming for convenience, many are opting for the use of mobile apps that allow for purchases using their mobile devices. Developers such as Apple and Google have enhanced their Apple Pay and Google Wallet for a more secure form of payment using users’ smartphones and without the use of their debit and credit cards.

Artificial Intelligence

Artificial Intelligence is being used by many companies in various uses such as detecting and preventing security intrusions, providing solutions to technical problems of customers, improving consumer promotions, running social media accounts and many more. AI is very much alive in 2020 for many mobile apps and is expected to generate $40 billion in profits this year. AI will be integrated into mobile apps in many ways and one of these will be in the form of chatbots. Chatbots will act as virtual assistants to answer queries from customers. Examples of this would be Hipmunk, TechCrunch, ManyChat and Chatfuel.

Instant Apps

Many users would want to test an app before downloading it into their devices. With instant app technology, which was spearheaded by Google in 2016, users now can test the app before fully downloading it. Instant apps are web-based, which means that it does not use the storage memory of the device. By using this technology, users have more chance of downloading the actual app as their experience using the instant app will entice to download the app.

With so many businesses competing with each other in various industries, it is only important that these companies retain their advantage over the competition and this can be done through the integration of these mobile app technologies into their apps to increase the value of their business and enhance the customer experience of using their apps. 2020 is only a few days in and there are still many things that could happen in the world of mobile device technology. The trends that have been mentioned in this article are only some of the trends that will continue with the year. As the year unfolds, new and emerging trends will surely arise, which will aim to create a better experience for the end-users.
